The Addicted Brain

چکیده
example is inflammation: perhaps the simplest form of pathology. It has well defined characteristics which, for many of the old continent, were described in latin: rubor, tumor, calor, dolor, and functio lesa. When these characteristics are present, the pathology/disease can be diagnosed. If it occurs in the lung it will indicate pneumonia, in the kidney nephritis etc. Likewise, a brain chronically receiving drugs changes its physiology, its biochemistry, and even its anatomy in its most intimate structure such as dendritic spines and genes. An excellent example (but many other exist) is provided by one of the most intensely studied neuronal systems of the brain in addiction studies: the dopamine system.

Chronic Opium Treatment Can Differentially Induce Brain and Liver Cells Apoptosis in Diabetic and Non-diabetic Male and Female Rats
It has been shown that some opium derivatives promote cell death via apoptosis. This study was designed to examine the influence of opium addiction on brain and liver cells apoptosis in male and female diabetic and non-diabetic Wistar rats. This experimental study was performed on normal, opium-addicted, diabetic and diabetic opium-addicted male and female rats. Apoptosis was evaluated by TUNEL...
متن کاملAssessment of brain laterality among Iranian addicts and smokers
Previous research supported that the prevalence of addiction is related to brain laterality. Brain laterality is often determined by left/right handedness and this phenomenon is considered as an important factor in addiction prevalence. The present study attempts to examine the relationships between left/right handedness with addiction and smoking on Iranian population. In this study, 2000 male...

متن کاملThe brain, obesity and addiction: an EEG neuroimaging study
Obesity is among the greatest challenges facing healthcare systems with 20% of the world's population afflicted. Great controversy exists whether obesity can be regarded as an addictive disorder or not. Recently the Yale Food Addiction Scale questionnaire has been developed as a tool to identify individuals with traits of addiction towards food. Using clinical and source localized EEG data we d...
متن کاملActivation of orbital and medial prefrontal cortex by methylphenidate in cocaine-addicted subjects but not in controls: relevance to addiction.
Drugs of abuse are rewarding to addicted and nonaddicted subjects, but they trigger craving and compulsive intake only in addicted subjects. Here, we used positron emission tomography (PET) and [18F] deoxyglucose to compare the brain metabolic responses (marker of brain function) of cocaine-addicted subjects (n = 21) and controls (n = 15) to identify brain regions that are uniquely activated in...
متن کاملEvaluation of Model-Based Methods in Estimating Dynamic Functional Connectivity of Brain Regions
Today, neuroscientists are interested in discovering human brain functions through brain networks. In this regard, the evaluation of dynamic changes in functional connectivity of the brain regions by using functional magnetic resonance imaging data has attracted their attention. In this paper, we focus on two model-based approaches, called the exponential weighted moving average model and the d...
